Abstract
This study investigates the influence of computational thinking on the academic performance of computer science students at the University of Port Harcourt. Computational thinking, which encompasses skills such as algorithms, decomposition, pattern recognition, and abstraction, is increasingly recognized for enhancing problem-solving abilities and academic achievement across various domains. Using a descriptive survey design, data were gathered from a sample of 100 computer science students to evaluate how computational thinking skills impact their performance in specific areas, including coding, project management, and logical structuring. Findings indicate that students with strong computational thinking skills perform better academically due to improved problem-solving efficiency, organized code structure, and reduced cognitive load. These skills not only facilitate understanding of complex subjects like software engineering and data structures but also promote teamwork and adaptability in collaborative settings. The study underscores the importance of integrating computational thinking into educational curricula to optimize learning outcomes and recommends further research on its impact across diverse educational institutions.
