Teacher’s Stress and Learning Outcomes in English Language Among Senior Secondary School Students in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the teachers’ stress and learning outcomes in English language among senior secondary school students in Ikere local government area of Ekiti state. The study employed a descriptive survey research. The population of this study comprised senior secondary school two (SSS II) students and their teachers in Ikere local government area of Ekiti State. The sample for this study consisted of one hundred (100) senior secondary school two (SSS II) students and five (5) English language teachers in public secondary school teachers in Ikere local government area of Ekiti State. The respondents were selected using simple random sampling techniques. A self-structured questionnaire and Achievement Test were the instruments that were used in this study. The two instruments were tagged “Teachers’ Stress Questionnaire (TSQ) and Students’ Achievement Test in English language (SATE). Data collected were analysed using Simple means and t-test analysis techniques. Based on the data analysis findings revealed that there is significant difference between the mean performances scores of English language students taught by stressed teachers and those in control group. Since students taught by non-stressed teachers in the control group had higher mean score rating than those exposed to experimental group, hence students in non-stressed teachers group performed better than the counterparts in the experimental group. The study recommended that Secondary school teachers should undergo regular stress management training to equip them with coping mechanisms and strategies to reduce stress levels, thereby enhancing their teaching effectiveness and improving students' learning outcomes. The government and school administrators should ensure the availability of adequate teaching and learning resources, such as textbooks, multimedia teaching aids, and English language instructional materials, to reduce the workload and stress of teachers.
