An Assessment on the Effectiveness of Strategies in Curbing Deviant Behaviors Among Senior Secondary Schools in Kano Metropolitan Area

Abstract
The study assesses the effectiveness of strategies in curbing deviant behaviors among senior secondary schools in Kano metropolitan area. Four research objectives with four corresponding research questions and four hypotheses were raised. Descriptive research design of survey types was used for this study. The population of the study comprised of four hundred and fifty four (454) respondents. The researcher used 105 sample of respondent’s using purposive sampling to select five public senior secondary schools. The instrument used for data collection was a self-developed close ended structured questionnaire. Data was collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics; i.e. simple frequency, percentage on both bio data and responses on the questionnaire. Findings from the study revealed that High prevalence of deviant behavior of students reported witnessing deviant acts. Most common deviant behaviors are Truancy, fighting, and disrespect to teachers. And Most used strategies are Punishments, counseling, and parental involvement. The study therefore concludes that deviant behavior remains a significant challenge in secondary schools, with truancy, fighting, and disrespect to teachers being the most prevalent. While punitive measures like suspensions and detentions are frequently used, counseling and parental involvement show promising results in managing student behavior. The study therefore recommended among others that schools should establish professional counseling centers to help students with behavioral challenges. Regular counseling sessions should be conducted, focusing on discipline and moral development. Schools should collaborate with parents through regular meetings and disciplinary discussions.
