Abstract
This research examines the comparative analysis of the morphology of Ikaram and Ibaram,
which are speech forms spoken by communities in Akoko, Ondo state, Nigeria. Morphology as a
branch of linguistics plays a very vital role in language and the two dialects which are the main
focus of this research is not excluded. According to Lyons (1968), morphology is concerned with
the analysis of words into their constituent parts, and with the study of the relationships between
these parts. Chomsky (1965) defines morphology is the study of the systematic properties of
words, including their internal structure and their external relationships.
Leonard Bloomfield (1933) also defines morphology as the study of the forms of words and their
relations to one another. Morphology studies the internal structure of words. It is concerned with
word formation. When we study morphology, we are interested in morphemes. Morphemes are
those unit that are put together to derive words.
That being said, these two dialects according to research share geographical proximity, their
linguistic structures particularly in morphology may reveal both similarities and differences. This
study, therefore seeks to discover and compare the mechanisms of word formation in Ikaram and
Ibaram.
