Influence of Educational Television on the Advancement of Child Education: a Study of Selected Primary Schools in Obio-Akpor Local Govenrment Area

Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the influence of educational television on the advancement of child education in some selected public primary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The study employed descriptive survey design. The sample size for the study consists of 278 of the target population. Simple random sampling technique was used as sampling procedures. Data collected through a structured questionnaire was analyzed using weighted mean (X) and percentage and was weighted on a four likert-type scale using a scale of 2.5 as the benchmark. Findings from the study revealed that pupils in public primary schools in Obio/Akpor L.G.A. of Rivers State are awareness various of educational television programs and derive educational values from educational television. The finding also shows that educational television has a positive effect on academic achievement and challenges hindering pupils in public primary schools in Obio/Akpor L.G.A. of Rivers State from watching educational television programmes include inadequate power supply, high cost of subscriptions to the satellite television stations, time constraints, high cost of acquiring television and inconsistent of the programme. The study recommends that the Ministry of Education should be involved in vetting of appropriate Television programs relevant for watching by pre-school children and both parents and teachers should be involved in the choice and selection of appropriate and educative Television programs for pre-school children.
