An Investigation Into the Achievement of Integrated Science Students in Junior Secondary School in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State

This study investigates the achievement levels of Integrated Science students in Junior Secondary Schools within the Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State. A descriptive survey research design was utilized. The study encompassed four secondary schools: Igueben Grammar School, Igueben Girl’s Secondary School, Egbesan Secondary School, and Ekekhen Secondary School. In total, 100 questionnaires were distributed, 25 to each school. At the end of the administration, 40 questionnaires were retrieved and analyzed using the SPSS package. The findings indicate that the teaching methods used by educators are not effective. Additionally, the lack of adequate learning resources, along with poor utilization of available resources, can significantly impact the academic performance of junior secondary students in the Igueben local government area. It was also noted that students exhibit a positive attitude towards integrated science and its relevance to their future careers, showing a significant correlation between their attitudes and their achievements in the subject. The study suggests that the implementation of innovative teaching methods that promote active learning, critical thinking, and practical application of Integrated Science concepts could enhance the academic performance of students in the Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State.
