Election Security and Election Integrity in Nigeria 2023 General Election (a Case Study of Kaduna North Local Government 2023 General Election)

This study examines the issues related to election security and electoral integrity in Nigeria, focusing on the effectiveness of security measures, the neutrality of security agencies, and the prevalence of electoral malpractices. A survey was conducted to gather public perceptions on these issues and the overall credibility of the electoral process. The findings reveal a significant disparity between existing security measures and public confidence in the electoral system. Many respondents reported instances of electoral violence and perceived bias from security personnel. These challenges are analyzed through the framework of Rational Choice Theory, which emphasizes the manipulative behaviors of political actors seeking electoral victories at the cost of ethical standards. The study concludes that, despite existing security measures, the credibility of the electoral process remains undermined due to a lack of transparency and political interference. Based on these findings, the study proposes several recommendations, including the enhancement of voter education, training of security personnel to maintain neutrality, strict enforcement of electoral laws, empowerment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the integration of technological innovations in the voting process, and active involvement of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in election monitoring. The study stresses the need for political will to implement comprehensive reforms in order to restore public trust and ensure the integrity of future elections in Nigeria.
