Assessment of Challenges and Coping Strategies of Small-Scale Poultry and Fish Farmers in Girei and Yola North, Adamawa State

Abstract
The study focused on the assignment of challenges and coping strategies of small scale poultry and fish farmers in Girei and Yola North LGA, Adamawa. Specifically, the study examine the challenges faced by small scale poultry and fish farmers and the coping strategies they employed. Multistage sampling procedure, using simple random technique procedure was used to select 31 farmers. The data were collected using closed-ended questionnaires and focused group discussions. The data were analysed using likert scale and SPSS. The socio-economic characteristics showed that the average age of the farmers is 40 and the average household size is 6. The study also revealed that the 2 most important challenges were high cost of feed and Disease-outbreak. These were reported by 86% and 70% respondents respectively. The result also shows that 100% of the farmers faced one or two of this challenges. This implies that the farmers live with this challenges throughout their business. In addition, the result showed that the coping strategies employed by this farmers were, vaccination and Medication, boreholes and well, production of feed by themselves, personal savings and side income e.t.c. The result of the regression analysis rejects the null hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between the challenges faced by small scale poultry and fish farmers and the coping strategies they employed, and accept the alternate hypothesis.In conclusion, this study revealed that poultry and fish farmers in the study area faced one or all the challenges while employing ways to Mitigate the challenges.
