ABSTRACT
This study presents a comparative analysis of the antimicrobial effectiveness of two commonly used disinfectants, Izal and Dettol, against selected microorganisms. The purpose was to determine which of the two is more effective in inhibiting microbial growth, thereby guiding appropriate usage in various sanitation settings. Standard microbiological techniques, including the agar well diffusion method, were employed to assess the zones of inhibition produced by each disinfectant against a range of bacterial strains. The results revealed that Dettol exhibited significantly greater antimicrobial activity compared to Izal, producing larger zones of inhibition across most of the tested organisms. This enhanced efficacy is likely due to the presence of chloroxylenol, the active ingredient in Dettol, known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. In contrast, Izal showed moderate effectiveness, possibly due to its phenolic composition, which may act more slowly or be less effective against certain microorganisms. The findings suggest that while both disinfectants have practical applications, Dettol is better suited for high-risk environments requiring stronger microbial control, whereas Izal may be more appropriate for routine household cleaning
