Abstract
ABSTRACTIn recent years, bioremediation has become a very practical approach towards effortsof oil spill cleanup on aquatic environment like the mangrove swamps. Bioremediationare of two types; Bioaugmentation and biostimulation. Bioaugmentation involvesintroducing oil degrading microorganisms (e.g psuedomonas fluorescence, aspergilliusspecie and penicillium) into the affected site, while biostimulation has to do with theaddition of substances like cow dung which has supplemental nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to affected site to aid the existing oil degradingmicroorganisms. In the course of this experiment, a mangrove swamp was simulatedusing a drum of 200L. The drum was filled with water, sand, fresh and dry plant shrubs, and crude oil, in varying proportions and was rigorously stirred and left for some daysto inoculate, after which dried cow dungs were added for bioremediation process. Also, samples were taken from time intervals of 7days to test for the aromatic and aliphaticconcentrations in the laboratory.
