Abstract
The antibacterial activities of honey on some clinical isolates (Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogens and S.typhirium) was observed with 50% (v/v)aswell as the neat concentration (100%) v/v, using agar-ditch diffusion technique. Allthetested organisms were resistant to concentration of honey at 6.5, 12.5 and 25% (v/v).E.colishowed the highest zone of inhibition which increases with increased inconcentration followed by S.typhirium and Staphylococcus aureus. While Streptococcuspyogens showedthe least. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of honeypresented Escherichia colias the most susceptible organism and Pseudomonasaeruginosa also, the least. Honey obtained from University of Ilorin Teaching Hospitalon Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichiacoli, Streptococcus pyogens and S.typhiriumisolated from wound was studied. Agar well diffusion method was used to determine theantibacterial activity of the honey on the test bacteria. The result revealed that the twohoney samples have heavy antibacterial activities against the test organisms and zones ofinhibition were obtained showing high antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activityincreased with increase in the concentrations and honey from Nsukka produced a highantibacterial activity (clearer zone) on staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli at allconcentration and moderately for streptococcus pyogens. The use of honey as atherapeutic substance has been rediscovered by the medical profession on more recenttimes, and it is gaining acceptance as an antibacterial agent for the treatment of ulcersand bed sores, and other infections resulting from burns and wounds.
