Abstract

This study examines the intricate relationship between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from 2015 to 2024, with a particular focus on its implications for brain drain in the country. The persistent conflicts and negotiations between the government and ASUU have created a volatile academic environment, leading to increased emigration of skilled professionals and academics seeking better opportunities abroad. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research analyzes the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon, including inadequate funding for higher education, poor working conditions, and the socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria. The findings highlight how government policies and ASUU's responses have shaped the academic landscape and influenced the migration patterns of intellectuals. This study aims to provide insights into the consequences of government-union dynamics on national development and propose recommendations for fostering a more conducive academic environment that mitigates brain drain.
