The Effect of Automation on the Labour Market and Potential Policy Solution

Abstract

This study examined the effect of automation on the labour market from 2000 to 2022. The study employed secondary data obtained from Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin (2021) and analysed it using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression technique. The study revealed that Information Communication Technology output has a positive and significant impact on Total Employment in the labour market in Nigeria. Machinery and Equipment employed in industries has negative and significant impact on Total Employment in the labour market in Nigeria. It also shows that Information Communication Technology Import has a negative and significant impact on Total Employment in the labour market in Nigeria. High Technology Import has a positive and significant impact on Total Employment in the labour market in Nigeria during the period investigated. It therefore concludes that high technology import and information communication technology output are the major automation variables that significantly impact total employment in the labour market in Nigeria and recommended that education and skills training programs should be prioritized by the Nigerian government to equip the workforce with the skills needed to adapt to changing market demands, particularly in emerging sectors like technology and innovation.
