Abstract
A twelve(12)weeks study was carried out in rabbit unit of the Teaching and Research Farm, Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma on the effect of breed on body weight and hormonal profile of different breeds of rabbit. Thirty-six(36) matured rabbit were allotted into three groups of twelve(12) each ofChinchilla(CHIN), New Zealand White(NZW) and New Zealand Red(NZR)breeds and were grouped into a completely randomized design(CRD) experiment. Traits measured were body weight(BW) along with hormonal profile from New Zealand White, Chinchilla and New Zealand Red rabbits in controlled production conditions. The results of the study demonstrated differences in body weight with Chinchilla (2.26kg), New Zealand White (2.21kg), and New Zealand Red (2.20kg) respectively. The field of agro-science perceives rabbits as an increasingly promising protein source because of their quick reproductive rate combined with budget-friendly care and their ability to survive in multiple environmental conditions. The variation in genetic characteristics between breeds strongly affects the growth patterns of animals together with their hormonal functions and output potential. The knowledge of these distinctions helps enhance breeding operations and boost meat yield effectiveness.
