Abstract
ABSTRACTThis study was carried out to isolate and identify the level of bacterial contamination on door handles of hospitals and clinics within Ugbokolo, Okpokwu LGA, Benue State. A total of 120 door handle swab samples were collected from five selected hospitals within Ugbokolo. Sterile swabs were firmly pressed on the door handles, and the samples collected were cultured and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours.Isolation and identification of bacteria were done using standard microbiological procedures. The total viable bacterial count for the Primary Health Center was 6.0 × 10² (CFU/ml), Alpha Hospital 5.0 × 10² (CFU/ml), Holy Name Hospital 5.0 × 10² (CFU/ml), Otabo Hospital 4.0 × 10² (CFU/ml), and Inalegwu Clinic 3.0 × 10² (CFU/ml), respectively. The bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus species, Bacillus species, Klebsiella species, and Salmonella species. Regular cleaning of door handles and the use of self-disinfecting technology may reduce the load of bacterial contamination in these hospitals and clinics.
