Factors Influencing the Choice of Facility for Delivery Among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinic in Health Facilities in Enugu Metropolis

Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the factors that influence the choice of facility fordelivery among pregnant women attending Antenatal Clinic in Health facilities in Enugumetropolis. The objectives of this study were to; determine the socio-demographic, obstetric,health services and sociocultural factors influencing the choice of facility for delivery amongpregnant women attending Antenatal clinic in Enugu metropolis. A cross sectional descriptivedesign was used, employing a multistage sampling technique to select sample size of 292pregnant women. Data was collected after informed consent from the respondents was grantedand it was analysed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 and MicrosoftExcel. Result of the findings revealed that The obstetrics factors influencing the pregnantwomen’s choice of facility for delivery was mostly the concern about the baby’s health (80.0%).The health services factors influencing the choice of facility for delivery were majorly provisionof good emergency care for pregnant women and their newborn (95.2%) and 24/7 availability ofexperienced doctors, nurses and midwives (92.2%). The sociocultural factors influencing thepregnant women’s choice of facility for delivery was majorly that of facility their partner feltcomfortable with (62.6%. The women’s socio-demographic factors were not significantpredictors of their choice of delivery facility (p > .050). Obstetric factors were not significantpredictors of the women’s choice of delivery facility (p > .050). Health service factors were notsignificant predictors of the women’s choice of delivery facility (p > .050). The socio-culturalfactors: the influence of facility that neighbours used often (p = .010) and facility that mostfamily members accessed for delivery (p = .045) were significant predictors of the women’schoice of delivery facility. Based on the findings, conclusion was drawn, recommendations,suggestion for further studies were proffered as well as the implication of the study to nursing.
