Abstract
ABSTRACTThe university Libraries is an important academic unit in higher education because it provides information in various formats to support the teaching, learning and research objectives of the university. Library information resources include the print and electronic information resources that are acquired, processed, organized and disseminated to the entire users community to support their academic activities. In this era of competitive research and knowledge acquisition, university students consult their university libraries to locate and retrieve accurate, timely and up to date information. The mechanism put in place in the libraries to facilitate information retrieval and access is referred to as Information retrieval tools. The utilization of information retrieval tools has become an essential component in shaping students’ learning outcomes, particularly in public universities in Ekiti State. With the rapid growth of digital technologies and online resources, students now have access to vast amounts of information that can enhance their academic performance. This study explores how the use of information retrieval tools, including online databases, digital libraries, and search engines, influences students’ learning outcomes such as academic achievement, research skills, and critical thinking. Through a comprehensive review of literature and analysis of data from students and academic staff, the essay examines the extent to which these tools are used and the factors that determine their effectiveness. The findings indicate that students who efficiently use information retrieval tools tend to perform better academically, although challenges such as limited access to resources, inadequate training, and poor digital literacy skills remain obstacles. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure, better access to digital tools, and enhanced training in information literacy to optimize the use of information retrieval tools in public universities in Ekiti State.
