Insecurity and Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria Under President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration

Abstract
This study assessed insecurity and socio-economic development in Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration. The research investigated the causes and potential sources of insecurity under President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration. Also, the study assess the impact of insecurity has affected socio-economic development in Nigeria, and analyzed measures put in place by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration to curb insecurity and improve socio-economic development in Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted as interview was conducted. Both primary and secondary data were utilized for this study. Examining the causes and potential sources of insecurity, the study revealed that insurgency and terrorism, ethno-religious conflicts, farmer-herder clashes, inadequate security infrastructure, corruption, and lack of accountability. These findings indicate that insecurity in Nigeria cannot be attributed solely to political motivations. Rather, it is a result of a complex interplay of historical, socio-economic, and governance-related factors.Results from the study shows that the impact of insecurity has the negative consequences on agriculture, foreign direct investment, infrastructure development, education, employment, poverty levels, and inequality. The findings demonstrate that insecurity has far-reaching effects, hindering economic growth, disrupting livelihoods, deterring investments, and exacerbating social challenges. This highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies that address security concerns while simultaneously promoting socio-economic development. It also underscores the importance of stability and security in attracting investments, fostering job creation, and reducing poverty.The conclusion of this study is that, insecurity has influenced socio-economic development negatively, and factors like Ethno-religious crisis, terrorism, porous borders and lack of police presence has scared away investors which have brought about growth in the economy, also from research other forms of insecurity experienced.
