Abstract
This study provides a theoretical review of the privatization of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) as a potential strategy for addressing its persistent inefficiency and deterioration. It explores the evolution of the NRC, the rationale behind privatization, and its possible effects on operational performance, maintenance, and customer satisfaction. The paper draws from public choice theory, property rights theory, and institutional reform perspectives to highlight how private sector participation can enhance accountability, productivity, and sustainability in Nigeria’s rail transport sector. The review concludes that, when properly implemented, privatization could serve as a viable policy option for revitalizing the NRC and repositioning it as a key driver of national economic development.
