Abstract

ABSTRACTThe increasing occurrence of disinfectant-resistant bacteria in communalenvironments presents a growing concern for public health and hygiene. This studyaimed to isolate and identify bacteria resistant to commonly used disinfectants—Jik,Hypo, Izal, Dettol, and Harpic—on sanitary wares (toilet seats and sinks) in theFederal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) school hostels. Swabsamples were collected from selected sanitary wares and cultured on appropriatemedia. Isolated organisms were subjected to standard biochemical tests, includingSIM, catalase, citrate, and oxidase, to aid in identification. Disinfectant susceptibilitywas assessed using a modified agar diffusion method. A total of five bacterial isolatesshowed resistance to at least one disinfectant. The identified resistant organismsincluded Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcusaureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis.These findings highlight the potential for ineffective disinfection in communalrestrooms and underscore the need for strict hygiene protocols, monitoring ofdisinfectant efficacy, and resistance surveillance. The study emphasizes theimportance of proper disinfection practices to mitigate the spread of resistant bacteria
