The Effect of Christianity on Ossiama-Owei Kingdom, Bayelsa State

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to examine some of the cultural beliefs and practices of the Ossiama people before the advent of Christianity. And also to examine the challenges facing the Ossiama religion, culture and the traditional practices. The study, the effect of Christianity on the Ossiama-owei kingdom of Bayelsa state had some impact and consequences on the traditional and cultural practices of the people, such as death and burial ceremonies, the Adigbe festival etc and ritual practices among others. The advent of Christianity in Ossiama-owei kingdom brought about conflict between the two religions. However, for a peaceful co-existence between the two regions, the researcher recommend for dialogue and understanding, which is between Christians and practitioners of traditional regions. And this can be achieved through regional tolerance, promotion of respect and acceptance for diverse practices and beliefs, stopping the imposition of western values and norms. Christians are advised to have freedom to express their faith within their cultural context. However, by implementing these recommendations, it is possible to create a harmonious co-existence between Christians and traditional practitioners in Ossiama kingdom.
