A Cytological Study of Chrysichthys Nigrodigitatus from Makoko Lagos Lagoon, Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge of chromosome structure of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus . The species of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus use in this study was collected from Makoko Lagoon, Lagos State. This studies was carried out to investigate and assessing the chromosome morphology of Chrysichthys nigrodigitaus in preparation for the crossing with other species of Clarias. Cytogenetical analysis was conducted using conventional Giemsa staining in getting well spreading mitotic and meiotic stages. The karyotype was to determine chromosome number, studied morphology of chromosome, and potential chromosomal polymorphisms. The results revealed that Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus was establish to have a diploid chromosome number of 2n=70 with a karyotypic formula of 2n=12m+6sm+52t established. The interpretation of this karyotypic formula is that, this chromosome type consisted of 12 pairs of metacentric, 6 pairs of submetacentric and 52pairs of telocentric. The findings contribute to the understanding of the genetic composition of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, offering insights into its evolutionary relationships within the Claroteidae family. This study provides a valuable cytogenetic baseline for genetic conservation, aquaculture improvement, and future comparative genomic studies.
