The Impact of High Income Inequality and Poverty in Rural Areas of Gezawa Local Government, Kano State Nigeria

Abstract
This study assesses the impact of high income inequality and poverty in rural areas of GezawaLocal Government Area, Kano state Nigeria. The specific objective of the study is to examine thecauses of income inequality of the people in rural areas. The methodology involved the use ofstructural questionnaire to gather primary data on 110 respondents in the research area. Basedon the analysis of the questionnaire distributed and analyzed it became more conspicuous thatmajority of rural dwellers are low income earners. The result of the first hypothesis testingrevealed that high income inequality has an impact or effect on the standard of living of thepeople. It was recommended that policy focus in Nigeria should therefore emphasizeinfrastructural development that will lead to more job opportunities, higher level of income percapita which will reduce the level of poverty.
