Perception of the Teachers About the Usage of Improvised Materials in the Teaching of Senior Secondary School Biology. a Case Study of Ila Local Government Area of Osun State.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
In any learning context, teaching without instructional materials in an abstract manner and will
not produce fruitful or significant results. This descriptive study examines the perception of
teachers about the usage of improvised materials in the teaching of senior secondary school
Biology. The sample for this study consists of both biology teachers and their students. Sixty
(60) teachers and Two Hundred and Forty (240) Students were randomly selected across
secondary schools in Ila Local Government Area of Osun State. Two questionnaires were
design to collect data for this study. The data collected were analyze using frequency count
and percentage for the demographic information while mean was used to analyze the research
questions. Based on the findings of this study, conclusions were made Improvised materials
are important for teaching and learning biology in senior secondary schools in Ila Local
Government. Also, the Biology teachers in Ila Local Government had good perception about
improvised materials and are using it for teaching and learning biology in senior secondary
schools. However, Lack of teaching aids, lack of teachers ability to improvise, non-availability
of facilities such as biological garden and shortage of time for biology lessons are some of the
problems of using improvised materials for teaching and learning biology in senior secondary
schools in Ila Local Government. Recommendations were made that teachers should try to
improvise instructional materials and encourage students to do the same. This will gives
students enough understanding of Biology concepts as the child’s local environment will be
used to source for the materials
