Abstract
ABSTRACTThis study explores the public perception of the Influence of Social Media on Modern Journalism Practice in Nigeria. The objective of this study is to examine the challenges of the social media to positively influence modern journalism practice. Anchored on the Democratic Participant and Diffusion of Innovations Theories, the study interrogates the possible ways to form a synergy between the mainstream journalism and social media. The survey design was deemed as the most suitable research design for this study. Findings show that a great number of journalists in Nigeria have access to internet and are exposed to social media networking tools, that the social media has enhanced the productivity of journalists in Nigeria and have broadened their news sourcing and dissemination, amongst others. To this end, the study recommends that media organizations and press bodies should organize seminars and workshops to sensitize and educate journalists on the impact of social media tools so that they can embrace social media and use the networking tools to improve their skills and professionalism.
