Abstract
Sickle cell disease is a significant genetic disorder, and accurate determination
of hemoglobin variants is critical for diagnosis and management. Sickle scan, a rapid point-ofcare test, offers an alternative to the gold-standard hemoglobin genotype electrophoresis
.
Aim: This study evaluates the performance of Sickle scan relative to hemoglobin genotype
electrophoresis in determining hemoglobin variants.
Method: A total of 162 samples were analyzed using both Sickle scan and electrophoresis.
Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were assessed by comparing Sickle scan results to
electrophoresis as the reference method.
Results: Sickle scan demonstrated a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 100%, and overall
accuracy of 100% It reliably detected HbA, HbS, HbC
Conclusion: Sickle scan is a reliable, rapid alternative for detecting hemoglobin variants,
although in cases requiring comprehensive analysis of rare hemoglobin variants or confirmatory
testing, hemoglobin electrophoresis should remain the method of choice It is suitable for pointof-care settings but should be complemented by electrophoresis in complex cases
