Semiotics in Masquerade Costumes: an Examination of Egwu-Afia and Igbabonalihmin Masquerades

Abstract

This study explores the semiotics in the costumes of Egwu -Afia andIgbabonelihmin masquerades, two prominent cultural expressions in Nigeria.By examining the symbols and meanings embedded in these traditional attires,the research highlights how these costumes communicate social, spiritual, andpolitical messages. Egwu-Afia, from the Igala culture, and Igbabonelihmin,from the Esan people, each utilize unique motifs and designs to convey identity,status, and cultural heritage.
