Challenges of Revenue Generation in Local Government Administration (a Case Study of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State)

Abstract
ABSTRACTThis study examined the challenges of revenue generation in local governmentadministration. A study of Etsako west local government area of Edo State. Theobjectives of the study include: To ascertain how government establishmentraise revenue from its citizenry and to find out whether the method of enforcingaccountability is very effective. To achieve the above, some research questionswere asked while the survey methodology was used to tackle the problemraised. To elicit the opinion of respondents, the questionnaire was used as theinstrument of data collection. Data were analyzed using simple percentage andchi-square method. Findings revealed that various factors contributing to thechallenge, including governance issues, corruption, inadequate training ofrevenue collectors, transportation and communication deficiencies, andtaxpayer apathy. The study recommends among others that federal governmentshould grant local governments full political powers for effective programformulation and implementation aligned with local needs and that Establishmechanisms for immediate exposure and prosecution of fraudulent activities,with regular internal and external audits to maintain financial transparency.
