Hiv/aids Risk Awareness and Adoption of Preventive Measures Among Secondary School Teachers in Urua Offong Oruku Lga

ABSTRACTThe study examined HIV/AIDS risk awareness and the adoption of preventive measures by secondary school teachers in Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Four objectives and four research questions were formulated respectively to guide the study. The literature review was extensively done under the theoretical, conceptual and empirical framework. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The total population used for the study comprised of 260 secondary school teachers from four drawn secondary schools in Urue Offong, Oruko Local Government Area. A sample size of 200 teachers was drawn for the study using stratified random sampling technique. Researcher Structured Questionnaire titled: HIV/AIDS Risk Awareness and Adoption of Preventive Measures by Secondary School Teachers Questionnaire (HRAAPMSSTQ) was the main instrument used to collect data for the study. The research questions were answered. Simple percentages was adopted to answer the research questions. The results from the study revealed that there is a strong awareness of HIV/AIDS risk factors and preventive measures, particularly the effectiveness of condoms and the dangers of unprotected sex among secondary school teachers in Urue Offong, Oruko Local Government Area. It was recommended among others that governments should organize regular workshops and seminars for teachers to update their knowledge, share experiences, and discuss effective strategies for HIV/AIDS prevention.
