Encountered Problems by Managers in Setting Up Small-Scale Hospitality Business in Calabar Municipality of Cross River State

Abstract

This study examined problems encountered by managers in setting up small-scalehospitality business in Cross River State. To achieve the purpose of this study, fourresearch questions and corresponding hypotheses were formulated to guide the study.Related literature was reviewed based on the purpose of the study. The population ofthe study comprised nine hundred and eighty seven (987) small-scale hospitalitybusinesses in Calabar Municipality. Total sample of two hundred (200) respondentswere selected for the study using multi-stage sampling technique. The maininstrument used for data collection was questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 24items, the instrument was validated by three experts, two from Business Educationunit and one from Measurement and Evaluation in the Department of EducationFoundation, Guidance and counselling. Data collected were analyzed using differentstatistical techniques. The research hypotheses were tested using one way analysis ofvariance (ANOVA) and independent t-test. All the hypotheses were tested at .05 levelof significance. The study found that financial problem, Managerial problem,infrastructural problem and competition problem had significant effect on small-scalehospitality businesses in Calabar Municipality of Cross River State. The studyrecommended among others that management of small-scale hospitality businessesshould have priority in building group cohesion for effective implementation ofmanagement practices in an atmosphere of trust and cooperation
