Prevalence and Determinants of Hypertension Among Private School Adolescents in Esan West Local Government Area

Abstract
To reduce the risk of hypertension, information on the trend and prevalence ofhypertension as well as the determinants among adolescents is essential. Hence, this study assessedthe prevalence of hypertension among adolescents. A descriptive cross-sectional design was usedfor this study and 110 adolescents were recruited. Information on their socio-demographics anddietarys were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. measurement was performed usingan oscillometric device validated for children or by auscultation an air sphygmomanometer wasused to estimate the anthropometric status of the adolescents. Data analysis was carried using SPSSweek while 20.2% claimed 5 or more times aweek. Majority (40.4%) reported vegetable intake 2-4 times a week while only 18.3% claimed 5 ormore times a week. While 42.2% reported intake of soft drink 2-4 times a week; 25.7% claimed 5 ormore times a week. Majority (40.4%) reported intake of fast food 2-4 times a week while about 16%reported 5 or more times a week. Majority (30.3%) reported they never skip breakfast. Majority(35.8%) claimed they eat meals away from home once a week and about 17% reported 5 or moretimes a week. Majority (35.5%) reported eating late in night once a week while 11.2% reported 5 ormore times a week. In conclusion, the prevalence of hypertension is high, with dietary patternremaining as the major determinant.
