Cultural Activities and Development of Tourism in Cross River State, Nigeria: a Case Study of Calabar Municipal Council

Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this is to investigate Cultural Practices and Tourism Development
in Calabar Municipal Council Local Government Area of Cross River State. To
achieve this purpose, four null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05
level of significance. Two hundred inhabitants of Calabar Municipal Council
comprising of male and female were sampled for the study using simple random
sampling. The data collected using the questionnaire was analyzed using Pearson
Product Moment Correlation Coefficient tool of analysis to test the hypotheses
formulated for the study at 0.05 level of significance. Findings show that there is a
significant relationship between harvest festivities, boat regatta, fishing festival
and traditional dances vis-à-vis tourism development. In fact these are the life
wires of tourism and many African countries based on the findings as they relate
to Calabar Municipal Council Local Government Area, recommendations were
generalized to cover all the Cross River State and Nigeria on how tourism can be
taken to the next level for sustainable economic growth and development.
