Effect of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme on Academic Performance in Private Polytechnic in Ekiti State

The study is to evaluate the effect of students’ industrial work experience scheme on academic performance in private polytechnics in Ekiti State. However, the specific objectives are to examine the effect of skill development; identify the effect of industry type; determine the effect of placement; and analyse the effect of the combination of skill development, industry type, placement and supervision on academic performance in private polytechnics in Ekiti State.The research design adopted for this study is descriptive survey research design. The population comprising of all 145 ND II students of Crown Polytechnics who are on SIWES. The total number of sample participants in this study were 106. Data collected from this study was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The respondent demographic variables and responses were analyzed with the aid of frequency tables and percentages. The hypotheses of the study were tested using inferential statistics such as multiple regression.The results showed that skill development has significant effect on academic performance in private polytechnics in Ekiti State. Furthermore, the second result showed that industry type has significant effect on academic performance in private polytechnics in Ekiti State. In addition, placement has significant effect on academic performance in private polytechnics in Ekiti State. Lastly, supervision has significant effect on academic performance in private polytechnics in Ekiti State.Based on the findings, it is therefore concluded that student industrial work experience has positive effect on academic performance in private polytechnics in Ekiti State.Based on the findings, it was recommended that higher educational institutions must ensure that the venues for the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme are equipped with the necessary technical apparatus for student utilisation. There must be sufficiently skilled personnel established to convey essential personal and interpersonal skills to pupils, hence enhancing their professional careers. Machines and equipment must be easily accessible at authorised Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme stations to enable students to effectively handle or operate them. Students participating in the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme should be evaluated and graded under supervision to ensure they approach it with due seriousness. Students participating in the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme should receive allowances during the program to facilitate their transportation to the fieldwork. Students returning from the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme should undergo examinations to assess the skills acquired and evaluate their level of absorption.
