Developing a Biology Education Framework for Promoting Sustainable Development Goals (sdgs) in Ekiti State

Abstract
ABSTRACTThis project examined the developing a biology education framework for promotingsustainable development goals (SDGs) in Ekiti state. The objectives if the study is to examine thecurrent state of biology education in Nigerian secondary schools; the challenges facingcurriculum designed for teaching biology; the challenges faced by biology teachers inincorporating Sustainable Development Goals into their lessons and to develop strategies forimproving teacher capacity to effectively integrate SDG-related content into biology instruction.The descriptive research design of the survey type was employed in the study while thepopulation comprises of 41 teachers in Ado Local Government. A research instrument was usedin this work titled “Developing a Biology Education Framework for Promoting SustainableDevelopment Goals Questionnaire (DBEFPSDGQ)”. Face and content validity of the instrumentwas observed. A test-retest method of reliability was conducted. The reliability coefficient of0.88 was obtained. The result revealed that biology curriculum is regularly updated to reflectrecent advancements in biology, the curriculum provides adequate practical activities for studentsto apply theoretical knowledge, there is a sufficient emphasis on environmental conservation andsustainability in the curriculum, the biology curriculum is sufficiently challenging for students inNigerian secondary schools. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the biologyeducation framework should highlight the significance of sustainability challenges on both localand global scales. Students must grasp how global issues like climate change and resourcedepletion impact local environments and how local actions can play a role in addressing globalconcerns. Teachers should encompass a range of environmental, social, and economicsustainability issues, ensuring that students gain a comprehensive understanding of howbiological systems support sustainable development. Teachers should be provided withcontinuous professional development opportunities to equip them with the knowledge, skills, andpedagogical strategies needed to teach SDGs effectively.
