Abstract
ABSTRACTThis study investigated Barriers to effective teaching and learning of Literature inEnglish in senior secondary school in Owerri Municipal Council of Imo state. Fourresearch questions were posed to guide the study. The study adopted adescriptive survey research designs. The population of the stud comprised of5912 secondary school student of Owerri Municipal Local Government area ofImo state. The sample size of the population is 250 which was sample out of thepopulation using simple random sampling technique. The Instrument used in datacollection is a researcher made structured questionnaire. The data collected wasanalyzed using mean and standard deviation. The finding of the study revealedamong other barriers to effective teaching and learning of Literature in Englishsuch as inadequate instructional materials, no provided language laboratories andinadequacy of professional teachersBase on the findings, the study recommends among others that teachers shouldbe allowed to work for minimum of 8 years before transfer, a well structuredlanguage laboratory should be made available and only professional teachersshould be allowed to teach in order to bring about effective teaching and learningof Literature in English
