Abstract
This study investigate the effect “Asystasia gangetica” on glutathione concentrations in the livers of adult male wistar rats with flunitrazepam, a commonly abused benzodiazepine associated with significant health risks. Drug abuse, particularly the misuse of substances like flunitrazepam, poses serious public challenges, leading to both psychological and physiological impairments. Givens glutathione's crictical role as an antioxidant and detoxifying agent in liver ,this research aims to assess whether “asystasia gangetica” can mitigate the hepatotoxic effects of flunitrazepam. Sixteen male wistar rats were divided into four groups: Group A received “asystasia gangetica” extract, Group B was the control group receiving distilled water,Group C was treated with flunitrazepam , and Group D received both flunitrazepam and “Asystasia gangetica” .over 21 days treatment period, livers samples were collected for biochemical analysis, focusing on glutathione levels, including reduced glutathione (GSH),oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. The results revealed that flunitrazepam significantly decreased GSH and GPx levels in Group C compared to the control group. Conversely,Group D which received both flunitrazepam and “Asystasia gangetica” showed elevated levels of GSH and GPx,indicating potential protective effects. This study highlights the therapeutic potentials of “Asystasia gangetica” in mitigating drug-induced liver damage ,warranting further exploration into is mechanisms and applications in managing substance abuse- related hepatotoxicity.
