Abstract
Igarra, the Local Government Headquarters of Akoko-Edo in Edo State, Nigeria. The region is part of the Benin Nigeria Fold Belt, known for its complex geological history, including various metamorphic and igneous rocks such as schists, gneisses, migmatites, and granites. These formations reflect a long history of tectonometamorphic events dating back to the Precambrian era. This study emphasizes the significance of phyllite, a low-grade metamorphic rock, which indicates episodes of moderate pressure and temperature conditions that led to the metamorphism of pre-existing rocks in the area. The study provides a comprehensive geological analysis of the Igarra region in southwestern Nigeria, focusing on its phyllite rocks. It details the methodologies used in the petrographic and geochemical analysis of these rocks. The study involves preparing thin sections of rock samples for microscopic examination to identify mineral content and conducting geochemical analysis to understand the elemental composition. The results highlight the geological structures such as fractures, joints, and veins within the phyllite rocks. These findings are crucial for understanding the geological history and potential economic value of the region's mineral resources.
