Effect of Peer to Peer Teaching Strategy on Students Achievement and Interest in Chemistry in Senior Secondary Schools in Yenagoa Bayelsa State

Abstract
This study examined the effect of peer to peer teaching strategy on student’s achievement andinterest in Chemistry in senior secondary schools in Yenagoa Local Government Area ofBayelsa State. The study examined the mean achievement score of students taught using peerto peer teaching strategy an taught with discussion method, and also determine theachievement score of male and female students using peer to peer teaching methods anddiscussion method. This study utilized a quasi-experimental design, which includes a pre-testand post- test, as well as a control group. The population of the study comprises of 409Chemistry students. Selected 85 students using the simple random sampling technique. Theinstrument used for this study is the Chemistry Achievement Test (CAT) with a total of 20items distributed to the selected students. Data collected were analyzed using mean andstandard deviation to answer the research question. Z-test was used to test the hypothesis at0.05 level of significance. From the analysis, the study found out that students taught usingpeer to peer teaching strategy have higher mean value than students taught using discussionmethods, and also, there is a significant difference in mean score of male and female studentstaught using peer to peer teaching strategy and discussion method. From the findings, it isrecommended that chemistry teachers in senior secondary schools in Yenagoa LocalGovernment Area of Bayelsa State should incorporate peer to peer teaching strategy in theirlessons to enhance student learning.
