Abstract
Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus is of public health concern due to theeasy acquisition of resistance genes. In this research study, the antibiotic resistanceprofile of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinics in Umuahia was assessed. Atotal of 60 samples made up of 20 urine, 20 HVS (High vagina swab), 10 ear swaband 10 wound samples were obtained from different clinics in Umuahia and taken tothe laboratory for analysis. The isolates were characterized microbiologically basedon Gram stain colonial morphology and biochemical characterization and weretested against different commercial antibiotic disk. A total of 32 isolates ofStaphylococcus aureus were observed and high resistance was noted tocephalosporin, carbapenem and penicillin family which includes cephalexin andceptazidime, meropenem then followed by ampicillin and augmentin in this research.Cephalosporins had a resistance of 100% and 96.8% for cephalexin and ceftazidime, then carbapenem, meropenem 96.8 followed by Penicillin, ampicillin 100% andaugmentin 96.8%. From this study, it shows that there is a need to continuouslymonitor the trend of antibiotics susceptibility pattern in order to arrest theindiscriminate use of antibiotic in public health sectors and protect presentlyeffective antibiotics used against Staphylococcus aureus infections.
