Abstract
ABSTRACTIn this research work, the researcher investigated the “relationship between dietary supplement and optimum performance in sports among athletic students in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma”. The purpose of this study is to Investigate the relationship between dietary supplement and optimum performance in sports among athletic students in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. Three research questions were raised from the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire and a total of forty responses were obtained from the questionnaires that were administered. The researcher reviewed related literature which provided the much-needed background to the study based on the variables of the study. The simple percentage method of data analysis was used in analyzing the information gotten from the questionnaires. In a quest to accomplish this study, a descriptive survey research design was adopted. A sample of forty (40) students’ athletes in Ambrose Alli University sport team representing 45% of the population was selected. The data was collected through a structured questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in Health Education. Based on this study, the following findings were revealed; Students regularly use dietary supplements to enhance my athletic performance or support my fitness goals. Some believe that higher dosages of dietary supplements yield better results, regardless of the recommended guidelines. they often purchase dietary supplements from online sources or unauthorized vendors due to convenience or affordability. Based on the findings of this study, it was further recommended that; Athletic students should be encouraged to prioritize a balanced diet as the foundation of performance enhancement, emphasizing the role of whole foods in meeting most nutritional needs. Education on nutrient-dense foods can reduce reliance on supplements and improve health and performance. Athletes should work with certified sports nutritionists or dietitians to develop personalized supplementation plans based on individual dietary needs, activity levels, and performance goals. Personalized plans can help avoid unnecessary or harmful supplement use.
