Abstract
The study investigated the relative abundance of ethnomedicinal plant species found at thePermanent and Take-Off Sites of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, Nigeria. Field surveys were conducted to identify and record plant species, determine their frequency and relative abundance, and assess their medicinal relevance through local knowledge and structured interviews. A total of 35 plant species were recorded at the Permanent Site, while 42 species were documented at the Take-Off Site. The results revealed that the Take-Off Site exhibitedhigher species richness and even distribution, attributed to its relatively undisturbed nature compared to the ongoing infrastructural development at the Permanent Site. Dominant speciessuch as Azadirachta indica, Mangifera indica, and Senna occidentalis were observed to thrive inboth environments, reflecting their ecological resilience. Ethnobotanical data showed that 20 out of the recorded species had significant traditional medicinal applications, including treatmentsfor malaria, skin infections, hypertension, and gastrointestinal ailments. Comparative analysissuggests that the findings are largely in agreement with existing literature on plant diversity andmedicinal use in Northern Nigeria. The study emphasizes the need for conservation of plant biodiversity and indigenous knowledge systems within academic environments undergoing rapid development.
