Abstract
ABSTRACTThe increasing use of social media among secondary school students has raised concerns about its impact on academic achievement. This study examines the influence of social media on student academic achievement in Biology among senior secondary schools in Ekiti State. The study assessed the extent of social media usage, identifying its positive and negative effects, and determining its correlation with academic performance in Biology. The study adopts a descriptive survey research design, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect data from selected students. Data was collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings revealed that that social media influence student academic achievement in Biology in senior secondary school students while the level of social media like WhatsApp, Facebook and TikTok is very high and used daily by the students. The findings also revealed that social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook and TikTok negatively correlates with students' Biology achievement due to distractions and reduced study time while social media like YouTube is used by biology students to access Biology related educational content and affected students habits in Biology. The study further revealed that parents and teachers play crucial roles in regulating students media use to enhance academic achievement. It was therefore recommended that parents and teachers should monitor students' online activities to ensure that they use social media responsibly.
