Abstract
This study examines the role of social media in raising awareness of domestic violence in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Offa residents. The research explores the extent to which social media platforms contribute to educating the public, shifting perceptions, and encouraging victims to report cases of abuse. Additionally, the study identifies key challenges associated with the use of social media for domestic violence advocacy. Findings reveal that platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), and WhatsApp are widely used among Offa residents to access information on domestic violence. Social media campaigns have been found to significantly influence public attitudes, fostering a reduction in victim-blaming and increasing awareness of domestic abuse. The study also highlights the positive impact of social media in empowering victims to speak out and seek help. However, challenges such as misinformation, privacy concerns, and digital illiteracy hinder the effectiveness of these platforms. Despite these challenges, the research concludes that social media remains a vital tool for raising awareness, altering societal attitudes, and promoting support for victims of domestic violence. Recommendations for improving the impact of social media advocacy include enhancing digital literacy, collaborating with influencers and NGOs, and ensuring accurate and reliable content. This research contributes to the broader understanding of digital platforms as agents of social change, offering insights for future domestic violence awareness initiatives in Nigeria.
