Abstract
ABSTRACTThe purpose of the study was to examine the effect of instructional materials on students’ academic performance in computer studies in Government Secondary Schools in Uyo Local Government Area. Four specific objectives, four research questions and four null hypotheses which were tested at .05 level of significance was used. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population consisted of 1439 senior secondary two students. A total of 144 respondents constituted the sample size for the study. A 20 items structured questionnaire developed by the researcher tagged “Instructional Materials Questionnaire (IMQ) and 20 items computer students academic performance test (CSAPT)” were validated by 2 experts in the departments of Industrial Technology Education and 1 expert in the Department of Educational Foundation, Guidance and counseling, faculty of Education making it a total of three validators. The reliability co-efficient stood at 0.87 using cronbach alpha reliability test. The findings revealed that there is a significant effect of the effective use of instructional materials, teacher negligence of the use of instructional materials and teacher’s incompetency in the use of instructional materials on students’ academic performance in computer studies. The finding reveals that the use of instructional materials in teaching and learning has significant influence on students’ academic performance in computer studies in Uyo Local Government Area. In the light of the findings and conclusion, it was recommended among others that the government should strive and set aside a reasonable amount of education budget which will be directed to improve and construct libraries in schools as well as provide instructional materials, teachers should also be trained regularly on effective use of instructional materials in teaching and learning in the classroom and heads of schools should take it as a responsibility to monitor and supervised teachers effectiveness in the use of instructional materials.
