Abstract
AbstractThis study examines the transformation of Nigeria’s electricity sector, focusing on the shift from the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) in Lagos State between 2013 and 2023. It traces the historical development of Nigeria’s energy system, the reasons behind NEPA’s inefficiency, and the expectations that accompanied privatization. Through the use of both primary and secondary sources, the study investigates how issues such as inadequate funding, weak infrastructure, corruption, and regulatory lapses have continued to hinder effective power generation and distribution despite reforms. It also explores the impact of these persistent challenges on industrial growth, household welfare, and the overall economy of Lagos State. The research finds that although privatization aimed to improve efficiency and attract private investment, many of NEPA’s problems have persisted under IKEDC. The study concludes that genuine progress in the power sector requires transparency, sound management, strong regulation, and sustained investment in infrastructure and renewable energy alternatives.
