Abstract
The conversion of the MV Blue Ocean from a passenger vessel to a specialized seaweedharvester necessitates a comprehensive engineering approach. This study focuses on threecritical aspects: hull modification, weight computation, and structural rearrangement, which isconsidered essential for the vessel’s operational efficiency, structural integrity and regulatorycompliance. Hull modifications involved reshaping and reinforcing the hull to optimizehydrodynamic performance and integrate seaweed harvesting systems, including cuttingmachinery and conveyor belts. Weight computation employed naval architecture principlesand computational tools to reassess load distributions, ensuring balanced weight allocationpost-conversion. The removal of passenger amenities and addition of harvesting equipment, storage tanks, and processing units necessitated recalibration of the vessel’s center of gravityand buoyancy to maintain safety and stability under dynamic loads. Structural rearrangementprioritized functional workflow efficiency, transforming former passenger decks intoprocessing zones with reinforced bulkheads and decks to support machinery. Strategicplacement of storage holds and energy systems aligned with operational demands whileadhering to maritime safety standards. Analytical simulations and compliance checksconfirmed the vessel’s ability to meet industry regulations, demonstrating enhanced efficiencyin seaweed harvesting and onboard processing. This conversion framework underscores thefeasibility of repurposing existing vessels for emerging marine industries, promotingsustainable practices through tailored engineering solutions. The successful transformation ofthe MV Blue Ocean highlights the potential for similar retrofits to advance eco-friendly marineresource exploitation.
