Abstract
ABSTRACT Social media addiction has become a growing concern in the digital age, particularly due to its potential impact on mental health. This study examines the relationship between social media addiction, self-esteem, and psychological distress among adults in Ilorin South, Nigeria. Using a correlational research design, data were collected from a sample of adults aged 18 years and above through a structured questionnaire incorporating the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSSocial ES) and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). The study aimed to determine whether social media addiction and self-esteem significantly predict psychological distress. Statistical analyses, including Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression, revealed that excessive social media use is significantly associated with increased psychological distress, while self-esteem plays a moderating role in this relationship. Findings suggest that individuals with lower self-esteem are more vulnerable to the negative effects of social media addiction, leading to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. The study highlights the need for public health interventions that promote balanced social media usage and self-esteem enhancement programs to mitigate psychological distress. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on digital media consumption and mental health, offering valuable insights for policymakers, mental health professionals, and community stakeholders.
