Abstract
ABSTRACT The study examines the Socialisation process in Akure up to 1900. The study delves into the Socialisation process that shaped the community of Akure up to 1900, focusing on the cultural practices and community development within the region. Akure, a prominent Yoruba city located in present-day Nigeria, has a rich history that encompasses various aspects of Socialisation, including education, religious beliefs, gender roles, and communal engagement. The Socialisation process in Akure was deeply rooted in the Yoruba cultural heritage, which emphasized the transmission of knowledge, values, and customs from one generation to another. Education played a crucial role in this process, and children were taught essential skills, moral principles, and cultural traditions within the family and through apprenticeships with skilled individuals in the community. Moreover, traditional Yoruba religious practices, such as the worship of deities and ancestral veneration, were integral to the Socialisation process, instilling a sense of spirituality and community cohesion among the Akure people. Gender roles and expectations were also significant aspects of the Socialisation process in Akure. Boys and girls were socialized differently, with boys typically receiving training in farming, hunting, and leadership, while girls were taught domestic skills and responsibilities. Despite these gender divisions, the community recognized the importance of collaboration and interdependence, fostering a sense of unity and communal engagement among its members. By examining the Socialisation process in Akure up to 1900, this study sheds light on the cultural practices, educational systems, religious beliefs, gender roles, and community development within the region. It highlights the significance of intergenerational knowledge transmission, communal engagement, and the preservation of cultural traditions. Understanding the Socialisation process in Akure contributes to a broader comprehension of the historical and cultural dynamics that have shaped the community, providing insights into the development of contemporary Akure society.
