Abstract
This research investigates the design and installation of a solar-powered energy systemtailored for remote civil engineering construction site offices. The primary objective is to providea reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective energy solution that overcomes the limitations ofconventional power sources in remote locations. The study encompasses a comprehensive analysisof energy requirements, system component selection, and integration processes necessary for anefficient solar power setup.Detailed design specification and architecture to meet the energy requirement ofConstruction Site Office for Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Thefollowing components were used for the solar powered system for the site office: four 415W solarpanels, 3.2KVA solar inverter, two 12V 240AH batteries, a 24V, 80A charge controller, 6mmdiameter solar cable, a DC/AC breaker, a battery rack and other electronic components. The system was tested after the design arrangement and installation. The system worked inline with design specifications. Performance tests using various loads were carried out to evaluatethe system's effectiveness. It was observed that when loads of 1222W were applied, the systemlasted 7 hours. Thus, the operational time of the solar powered system during the day is about 7hours and it takes approximately about 5 hours to return to full charge. The results indicated thatthe solar power system effectively met the energy needs of the site office, providing anuninterrupted power supply. The research concluded that solar-powered energy systems are a viable and effectivealternative for powering remote construction site offices. This study contributes to the growingbody of knowledge on renewable energy applications and provides a practical framework forsimilar projects in other remote locations.
