Prevalence of the Various Types of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders Among Patients That Attended Galaxy British Hospital Complex Owerri, Imo State from 2016 to 2020

The purpose of the study is to assess the prevalence of tempromandibular joint disorders (TMD) among dental patients that attended Galaxy British Hospital Complex (GBHC) Owerri from 2016 – 2020, to find out the gender and occupation that is most prevalent to the TMJ disorders . This is a cross-sectional study of patients aged 20 years and above. This was carried out using a total of 909 dental patients folders for the five years from which 205 dental patients folders were TMJ disorder patients, comprising of 102 males and 103 females which belonged to different occupations and age groups. The prevalence of Temporomandibular joint disorder among dental patients attending GBHC Owerri include Internal degenerative disease, myofacial pain and disc displacement. The data collected were analyzed using Microsoft excel from which the data were represented using tables, line graphs, bar chart and pie chart. From the results, it could be deduced that, there is no statistically significant difference between TMJ disorders among dental patients that attended across the years, patients within the 20-29 age group which is 78 (38.24%), are more prevalent to TMD, and it follows the pattern down the group. Also the females were mostly affected with (50.24%) difference from the males (49.76%). It was also noticed that the students as an occupational variable were mostly affected by TMDs. The findings of this study although not alarming but entails further investigations to identify risk factors associated with TMD in order to establish measures for prevention and treatment especially in young persons.
